OUR CHURCH HISTORY

In 1956, LENWOOD BAPTIST CHURCH was founded in Baltimore, Maryland with eight members in the home of McKindley Jones. Rev. J.L. Nelson was elected as the Church’s first Pastor. During the pastorate of Rev. Nelson, the Church began worshipping in its first sanctuary at 1606 Harlem Avenue in Baltimore, Maryland.

In 1957, the Church reorganized and moved to 2624 Harlem Avenue. It was then renamed FIRST MOUNT CARMEL BAPTIST CHURCH

Rev. Lorenzo Mallory was elected as Pastor in 1958, upon the relocation of Rev. J.L. Nelson to the state of Pennsylvania. On March 10, 1977, the Church was renamed and incorporated as FIRST MOUNT CARMEL CHRISTIAN COMMUNITY CHURCH, INC. Rev. Mallory served faithfully as Pastor until his death in 1987.

In September 1987, Rev. Edward R. McClurkin became the Interim Minister. He was officially elected as Pastor in December 1987 and installed on April 17, 1988.

On Sunday, March 10, 1996, God blessed FIRST MOUNT CARMEL CHRISTIAN COMMUNITY CHURCH to enlarge its territory to its present location, 2900-2904 West North Avenue (Rev. Edward R. McClurkin Way).

Under the pastorate of Rev. McClurkin, the Church has grown spiritually, financially, and numerically. Members are consistently being empowered, encouraged and enthused. Several ministries have been birthed and partnerships established such as the Citizens For Community Improvement, the Panway Neighborhood Improvement Association After School Program and Narcotics Anonymous. FIRST MOUNT CARMEL CHRISTIAN COMMUNITY CHURCH continues to shine as a beacon light in the community. “As a City that is set on a hill, it cannot be hid.”
