Reverend Edward R. McClurkin, Pastor

Reverend Edward R. McClurkin is a native of Chester, South Carolina. He received his elementary and secondary education in Baltimore City Public Schools. Reverend McClurkin graduated from Carver Vocational Technical High School in 1957 and was inducted into the Carver Vocational Technical High School Alumni Hall of Fame on April 4, 2003. He is a graduate of the Baltimore School of the Bible and Virginia Theological Seminary and College/Virginia University of Lynchburg. He furthered his religious studies attending the Arlington Bible College. 

Reverend McClurkin served in the United States Army from 1962 to 1964, where he was Honorably Discharged with the rank of E5. He began his professional career with the United Parcel Service on October 12, 1964 as a part-time sorter and package driver. On June 30, 1995, he retired as a District Auditor/Center Manager after almost 31 years of employment. Over the years, on and off the job, he has impacted the lives of many, demonstrating the love, compassion and generosity of Jesus Christ.

Reverend McClurkin accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Savior and Lord on October 2, 1978. In July 1979, he was ordained as a Deacon in the Gillis Memorial Christian Community Church. He was licensed to preach the gospel of peace in June 1981 under the pastorate of Reverend Theodore C. Jackson, Jr. and was ordained an Elder on August 10, 1986 in the United Council of Christian Community Churches of Maryland and Vicinity. 

Reverend McClurkin was installed as Pastor of First Mount Carmel Christian Community Church on April 17, 1988. Under his pastorate, the church has grown spiritually, membership empowered, and multiple ministries established. Several outreach and evangelism initiatives, as well as partnerships were birthed, including Narcotics Anonymous, Youth Computer Training, Christian Education, Panway Neighborhood Improvement Association After School Program (Careway After School Program) and various clothing and food drives. Under Reverend McClurkin’s leadership, God blessed First Mount Carmel Christian Community Church to transition from 2624 Harlem Avenue, Baltimore, Maryland to its current location, 2900 W. North Avenue, also known as Rev. Edward R. McClurkin Way, Baltimore, Maryland. 

Reverend McClurkin is a past board member of the Rosemont Homeowners and Tenants Association and the Gwynnbrook-Garriwood Neighborhood Association. He is currently an active member of the Panway Neighborhood Improvement Association and the Citizens for Community Improvement Association.

Reverend McClurkin served with excellence as Third Vice President, Second Vice President and finally President of the United Council of Christian Community Churches of Maryland and Vicinity from August 1998 to August 2002. In addition, he held the positions of Treasurer and Executive Secretary. 

He is married to Ada Hardison McClurkin. He has two daughters: Julia V. Hardison and Lanette D. McClurkin; one grandson, Dr. Jermaine N. Johnson (Dr. Michelle D. Johnson) and one great-granddaughter, Zoë I. Johnson.

Reverend McClurkin states that every Christian has a duty to confront men and women with the invitation to encounter God through Jesus Christ. His favorite passage of scripture is John 8:12, “Jesus is the Light”. As a Servant of the King, Reverend McClurkin continues to shine his light in his family, ministry and community.
